Martha Clippinger: Hodge Podge Lodge

Museum
Martha Clippinger, who was born and raised in Columbus, is an important, nationally recognized emerging artist. She earned a Bachelor of Art cum laude from Fordham University and a Master of Fine Arts from Rutgers University. She has been awarded residencies from the MacDowell Colony, the Atlantic Center for the Arts, and the Edward F. Albee Foundation. She also received a prestigious Fulbright Foundation grant in 2013–2014. Two recent acquisitions to the permanent collection speak specifically to the idea of “The South”: Anni refers to quiltmaking and Anni Albers, who taught at Black Mountain College in North Carolina; vortex employs a peach basket, alluding to Georgia’s agriculture as well as migrant labor. For this exhibition Clippinger presents a selection of work from the past five years as well as new items. The artist’s production currently occurs in two modes: a kind of hybrid painting-sculpture (apparent in Anni and vortex) and translations of her colorful two-dimensional designs into woven carpets. The project will demonstrate the artist’s connection to—and ongoing dialogue with—the work of Alma Thomas and Eddie Owens Martin (St. EOM).
